An environmentalist is someone who cares about protecting the environment. The Earth gives us everything we need to survive: food, water, shelter, and so much more. As the human race has developed over time, we’ve used a lot of resources, and we haven’t always treated the Earth with the kindness, love, and respect it deserves.
So how can you help to protect our Earth?
1.) Try to be a vegetarian once a week.
Cows’ methane emissions are more detrimental to our atmosphere than cars’ emissions! The more meat we consume, the more we’re contributing to this problem. I’m a carnivore, but I try to go meatless one night a week in order to reduce my environmental footprint (and because it forces me to branch out and try new meal ideas)!
2.) Buy recycled products.
One of my favorite companies is Seventh Generation. They sell a bunch of cleaning and hygiene products! Their items are also pretty affordable.
3.) If it doesn’t have to be disposable, it shouldn’t be.
When you can avoid it, don’t buy things like plastic cutlery or paper plates. Instead, try looking for compostable versions of these items. If you’re a coffee fiend like me, you’ve probably noticed that nearly every store serves their iced drinks in plastic cups. Because I get a coffee every day, I use a reusable cup that I bought on Amazon (here’s one for Dunkin’ Donuts fans and here’s one for Starbucks lovers). Some coffee shops give discounts to customers who bring their own cups. Reusable water bottles also save tons of plastic, and can save you tons of money! For people who menstruate, consider investing in a Diva Cup that will save money and conserve resources. You also might consider bringing your own reusable bags—either the traditional ones or a cute tote bag. Our society is getting better and better at reducing, reusing, and recycling, but we’ve still got a long day to go.
4.) Add a plant to your home.

5.) Walk and/or take public transportation when possible.
6.) Be conscious of how long it takes you to shower and wash the dishes.
You’re probably using a lot more water than you need to be! It also helps if you only wash full loads of laundry.
7.) Encourage others to do the same!
Nobody’s perfect. Sometimes I forget my reusable bags or my coffee cup. Still, our actions make a difference. It’s up to us to treat our Earth with love so that we and our loved ones will be able to call it home for centuries to come. Get informed about how you can help protect the environment, and lead by example.
